Emperor Akihito to be succeeded by Son, Emperor Naruhito
For the first time in 200 years in history, a Japanese monarch abdicated from responsibility as the emperor of Japan. Emperor Akihito announced his abdication to his mythological ancestors. The emperor added that while thinking of the peaceful times which had been extended for many years after the war and reflecting on the past with the feeling of deep remorse, the emperor says he hopes that the ravages of war would never be repeated. The outgoing emperor is to be succeeded by his eldest son Naruhito on the midnight of April 30 th 2019.
