Over a thousand children under age 18 work tirelessly in mining sites in Cameroon
The District of Bétaré Oya in Eastern Cameroon is filled with the sight of children working in mining sites. These children are under age and this could be tagged child labor.
Although, there is no existing correct statistics, attesting to the claims, but town hall estimates over a thousand children under age 18 works tirelessly in these sites daily.
When asked, Moussa Damjouma, who is a child gold pinner said, “I come here to work because I need money to eat.”
According to mining operator, Justin Mbrama, “there are many children in the mines. It is these children who help us to better search for gold. We also help them by giving them some money.”
No doubt poverty could be seen as the compelling force, driving these children to the mining sites.
The United Nations agency in charge of child protection, has been putting in efforts to protect these children
UNICEF Chief Child Protection boss, Barbara Jamar, called for joint efforts for maximum output. She said - There are medical consequences, psychological, as well as physiological consequences on these children. So all partners are needed on board in order to have a real response plan.
