Japanese government vows not to derail in plans to relocate US base despite people's vote against the move
Voters on the southern Japanese island of Okinawa have voted against government's plan to relocate a controversial US military base from its current position to a new location on the island. The Japanese government has however, insisted on pressing ahead with the plan. Report from local authorities say the vote on Sunday recorded 72 percent votes against moving the US Marines Futenma airbase, and just 19 percent in favor of the plan. About 434,000 people opposing the planned relocation, turned out en masse against the plan so as to meet the threshold required for Okinawa governor, Denny Tamaki to "respect" the result of the symbolic referendum. In his address, the Japanese prime minister, Shinzo Abe said, his government sincerely identifies with the feelings of the people of Okinawa but moving the US troops presently at Futenma to the enlarged US base at Henoko cannot be postponed any further.
