Omar al-Bashir appoints new VP and prime minister in wake of months of protests demanding his removal.
President Omar al-Bashir of Sudan, has appointed Defence Minister, General Awad Ibnouf as his first vice president and governor of eastern Gezira state, Mohamed Tahir Ayala as prime minister. Bashir made the presidential decree on Saturday, just a day after declaring a yearlong state of emergency to counter protests calling for his removal from office. With this appointment, General Awad automatically replaces Bashir's long-time ally Bakri Hassan Saleh as Sudan's first vice president. Records attest to Ibnouf's involvement in the coup that brought Bashir to power three decades ago. The Sudanese leader had also previously projected Ayala as his potential successor as president . Bashir also dissolved the federal and provincial governments and replaced all state governors with military officials, still in the bid to quell weeks of demonstrations that have rocked his iron-fisted rule.
