"We will always comply with our values and fundamental rights but we will never compromise on protecting our borders" — Ursula Von Der Leyen
The European Commission President, Ursula Von Der Leyen said on Wednesday September 16, in her State of the Union speech in Strasbourg, France, that the EU is proposing an emergency framework to prevent sudden massive inflows of migrants.
The framework, which is meant to offer protection in strictly defined situations against "engineered and weaponised" mass movements of migrants, is also to help strengthen European values and fundamental rights. In her opinion, Europe needs the means to protect its borders at all times.
In her words, "We will always comply with our values and fundamental rights in this direction, but we will never compromise on protecting our borders."
